TNA to stick to federal solution

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) will not deviate from their stance on finding a solution based on the federal system, TNA Leader and Leader of the Opposition, R. Sampanthan, said. He was addressing a special meeting of the TNA held in Kilinochchi yesterday. The TNA Parliamentarians, Provincial Councillors and members of local bodies in the North and East participated in the meeting. Sampanthan further in his address said, from the time of Federal Party Leader late S.J.V. Chelvanayagam, federalism has been emphasized as a solution to the Tamil question and the TNA will continue with the same stance.

The TNA Leader also said, there were speculations about the TNA accepting a solution based on a unitary model, but the Alliance is firm on reaching a solution based on a federal system. The participants at the special meeting also discussed the issues regarding the new Constitution and the Tamil political issues. Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran was not present at the morning session of the meeting. But, he arrived for the second session in the afternoon.

CCPI-based overall rate of inflation drops to 0.9% in May 2024

The overall rate of inflation as measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) on a Year-on-Year basis has decreased to 0.9% in May 2024. According to the Department of Census and Statistics, the overall rate of inflation has decreased compared to the 1.5% recorded in April 2024. Food inflation has decreased to 0.0% in May from the 2.9% reported in April. Meanwhile, non-food inflation has increased to 1.3% in May from the 0.9% recorded in April.
